Valances and Cornices

There’s nothing wrong with installing drapes or curtains and leaving the curtain rod or other hardware exposed. However, if you want a neater, more finished look, window valances and cornices are worth considering. Here’s a closer look at the difference between the two and how to decide whether a valance or cornice is right for you.

Window Valances and Cornices: What’s the Difference?

Window valances and cornices are both coverings that go across the top of your window. They typically are made of the same fabric as the drapes to create a cohesive look. However, the two are structurally different.

Valances

Window valances have a more relaxed, free-flowing look. They also are less complicated in terms of structure. A valance is simply a piece of fabric that attaches above your curtain rod or other window treatment. The top of the fabric is anchored, and the fabric itself hangs down over the top of the window treatment.

Cornices

A cornice is essentially a more structured valance. It’s a “box” that caps the top of your drapes. Usually, the box is made of lightweight wood, and the same fabric used to make the drapes is stretched across the top. It creates the appearance of a box made entirely of fabric.

Why Use a Valance or Cornice?

Choosing between valances and cornices for windows usually comes down to which look you prefer. Both serve similar functions:

  • Creating a neat, clean finishing look for your windows
  • Hiding your drapery hardware
  • Blocking light from coming in the top of the window

Blocking light may not be important for everyone. However, if you have blackout shades and want to make sure extra light doesn’t come in the top of the window, a valance or cornice can help you make sure your window treatments work as expected.
