Drapery Hardware
If you’re selecting drapery for your home or business, you’re probably focusing on fabrics and pleat styles. However, the curtain drapery hardware you choose is just as important when it comes to both aesthetics and functionality.
You might be surprised by how many options you have for drapery hardware. Here’s an introduction to some of the main styles and materials.
Types of Drapery Rods and Hardware
Rods and Rings
Rods and rings are the most recognizable way to hang curtains. The simplest version is a rod-only system, which is used with rod pocket curtains. The curtain rod slides through the pockets at the top of these curtains. Rod-only systems are cost-effective and easy to install, but the curtains may be difficult to open and close.
Systems involving both rods and rings are durable and easy to use. In these, a set of rings attaches to the drapes, and the rings hook around a curtain rod mounted to the walls or ceiling.
Rod-and-ring systems help protect fabric from the stress of being repeatedly pulled across a curtain rod. They also open up opportunities for customization. Whether you prefer the modern look of steel or the rustic appeal of all-wood systems, it’s easy to find drapery hardware that fits beautifully into your decor.
Track Systems
If you’re choosing drapery for a business or you expect to open and close your curtains very frequently, a track system may be better than rods and rings. With a track system, drapes attach to carriers, which are small clips that sit on a track. The track is situated within a bar or rod mounted above the window.
Like traditional curtain rods, track systems come in a variety of materials and finishes, with looks that range from classic to modern.
These systems are appealing because they allow the drapes to open and close with a smooth, gliding motion. They also protect the fabric of your drapes and the curtain rod itself; even rings can eventually cause noticeable wear to curtain rods if the drapes are opened and closed very frequently.
Motorized Track Systems
If you like the idea of track systems but want something more high-tech, motorized track systems might be the right choice. Structurally, these systems are almost identical to other track systems. However, they include a motor that pulls the drapes open and closed. There are several ways you can control the motor:
- With a wall-mounted switch
- With a remote
- With a smartphone or tablet
- With a smart home system
Connecting the motor to a smart home system allows you to fine-tune control of your drapery. You can program the system to open and close the drapes at certain times of day, for example, or synchronize drapes in individual rooms or across your entire home.
